B1A4 may have not been in the Korean music industry for long but they have sure marked their presence. And they owe it to their efforts to compose and write their own songs since their first EP “Bling Girl.” The idol group that debuted in 2011 with their first single album “Let’s Fly” is now starting to show its color and style as artist as an increasing number of their own songs make it into their albums. There are actually probably few groups in the K-pop scene who’s improvement can be measured by their musical growth. Although they are still playful young boys that grill the girlfriend who seems to be with another guy in their new single “What’s Happening?”, they were no young boys when it came to talk of their music. Below is TenAsia’s interview with B1A4. Q. How does it feel to make a comeback with your new 4th mini album “What’s Happening?” CNU: We regularly ‘reset’ ourselves while we pursue our activities as B1A4. Every time we release a new album, the members take time to talk and we tell ourselves to stay grounded and remember the determinations and resolutions we had upon our debut. Now I’m at the point where I’m excited to hear what our fans have to say about our music. BARO: It is our comeback after six months. But it felt like we were gone for a year. Meeting our fans will be like meeting an old friend. I’m thrilled to meet them when we’re on stage. JINYOUNG: The new album is the result of the efforts by each member so I’m thrilled to find out what people will say. Q. Tell us more about the title song “What’s Happening?” JINYOUNG: If our latest single “Baby Good Night” was about a cute womanizer flirting with other girls behind his girlfriend’s back, this song is the other way around. The song is about a man witnessing his girlfriend with another man. There is a part in the song that says “What’s happening? On a good day like today,” meaning that ‘today’ is the couple’s anniversary. The man had something special planned for that day and instead he witnessed his girlfriend being unfaithful. The genre is a mixture of hip-hop beat and rocktronic. Real instruments were used. Overall, it’s rock music with an emphasis on string instruments to brighten up the tune. Q: Is the title single also by JINYOUNG?. CNU: Yes, he did all of it – composed, wrote and arranged it. JINYOUNG: I composed “Good Love” and CNU and BARO wrote the lyrics to it. The direction of the song changed quite a bit after discussions with our members. I believe that we made it all together. Q: I believe you solidified your style through your first studio album “Ignition.” JINYOUNG’s songs seemed to play a crucial role and you matured so much in album “In the Wind.” CNU: JINYOUNG wrote songs even for the first EP. We do get songs from renowned composers. But because we get to talk about the songs and make them ourselves, I think we’re able to do songs that suit and express us better. We didn’t know we would end up going mostly with our own songs. That wasn’t the original plan. I think we gradually came to find our true color after JINYOUNG’s song “Let’s Fly” was chosen as the first EP. Reporter. Kwon Seok Jung [email protected] Translator.
