[INTERVIEW] June 2013 Edition of Pati Pati Magazine
Q: Do you remember the first impressions you had of your members when you first met them? Jinyoung: I remember it! Because all of us hadn’t really come up to Seoul often, the feeling of countryside boys came strongly from us. But we’ve gotten quite used to the city life since we know more about Seoul now than we did then (laughter). When everyone first saw me, didn’t you think I would be a cold person? Baro: Yes. Jinyoung hyung’s impression still hasn’t changed. However, I’m worried because Jinyoung hyung is gradually losing weight due to his song work and drama schedules overlapping with each other. If I were to pick out something that hadn’t changed, it would be that Gongchan is as quiet as he was when we first met him, but that he still has an area that’s cute about him as expected of the youngest. CNU: No. Gongchan became quite manly lately, so I was surprised (laughter). Since Gongchan was the youngest, I used to unconsciously warn him on various things, so I used to think “Is he scared of me?”. But I feel like he approaches me comfortably now without any of that. What do you think? Gongchan: I was scared at first. However, I realized late on that he was sternly warning me on these things, so that I could become completely used to it. So I started thinking that CNU hyung is quite a good person (laughter). CNU hyung is a really kind and cute person. Baro: I also thought that CNU hyung was scary at first. Sandeul too! Jinyoung: That’s right. When we first heard about Sandeul, a company staff member told us that a really scary person with tattoos on his body would be coming! (laughter). But this innocent faced Sandeul was wearing glasses and sitting on a chair. Sandeul: Hahaha (laughter) - Q: Then is there an episode you can talk about now from when B1A4 just debuted? Jinyoung: Erm… We were going to the parking lot after completing a music broadcast, and our car door was opened so we immediately went inside that car. But there was another singer sitting in the car, so we carefully looked at the car and realized that it was the same type of car as us, but it was a different one. That’s why we yelled “We’re sorry!” and immediately got off (laughter). CNU: After starting this job, our daily lives became irregular and so there used to be a lot of times where we’d finish everything and it would be bright outside once we reach the dorms. We were still young at that time, so we used to talk and play in our room even though it was bright outside after finishing our work, but the person who lives below us complained that it was loud, so we created a rule to only talk quietly when we return to the dorms. But Sandeul’s talking voice has always been loud, so we were nervous (laughter). Gongchan: When Sandeul hyung went on our first stage, he wanted to hear the fans’ yells, so he shouted, “Are you having fun?” towards the audience, but there were around 3 no reactions, so I felt really embarrassed whenever I made eye contact with Sandeul hyung. Sandeul: Hoohoot (embarrassed laughter). Also, we had a live music broadcast at night before, but it would be too blocked with traffic if we went in our cars, so we rode on the subway. There was a few troubles on that subway, so we would go, stop, go, then stop, which made me really nervous. Baro: We’re always nervous when it comes to music broadcasts. Although it’s not possible to not wake the members up in the morning, all of us can’t wake up, so it takes a really long time to wake everyone up. We wanted to do something with that, so we decided that the member who woke up the earliest would be able to spray water in the face of the members who were still sleeping. Because everyone was able to wake up thanks to that, we still occasionally use this method, but I’m weak against the morning so I lose (laughter). CNU: Ah! And because we didn’t like repeating practice every day, there was a time when we all went outside and had a snowball fight (laughter). Q: There was a fresh era to B1A4 as well. Then what are fresh things to the 5 members? Jinyoung: Powdered formula milk. Also, when you drink sports drinks. CNU: To me, it would be the scent of chocolate and chocolate milk. I really liked it when I was younger, so I constantly drank it. Sandeul: When I was younger, I went hiking with my dad often, so the natural scent of the mountains (is fresh to me). Also, the banana milk you drink right after coming out of the shower. This is the best (laughter)!! Baro: I would also say a mountain. Or the scent of the wind that makes your nose feel fresh when you breathe in. Or the shikhye (sweetened traditional rice drink) that you drink early in the morning when you still aren’t completely awake. Gongchan: The scent of laundry detergent. When I was younger, my mom would wash the clothes that would get dirty after I played in dirt, and I still can’t forget the scent of the detergent from then. Q: Then how did you befriend new friends during your school days or even for B1A4? Jinyoung: Ever since I was younger, I was the type to approach someone and talk to them first. Anyone can be awkward at first, but if you be courageous and talk to them first, you can become friends. CNU: When I was a student, I had a lot of worries about things. But because I tried to always act bright and try my best not to show those worries, I think I was able to become friends with everyone. But it was natural becoming friends with the members, because our personalities all matched from the start to the point where it’s really fascinating. We all tried to understand each other, and if there was something going on, we would resolve it through talking. I think we were able to become friends because thoughts like that fit with each other. Sandeul: For me, I talk first to people I’m interested in and become friends. I naturally became friends with the members because we would always be practicing with each other. Baro: Even if I look like this on the outside, I’m actually quite shy, so I can’t be the first one to start a conversation. That’s why I wasn’t able to make friends right away as a student. I’m the type that becomes with someone gradually as time passes on. But for the members, even I became friends with them the moment we met. Maybe our personalities were just that similar. Gongchan: When I look back on my student days, there were a lot of instances were I created friends through similar hobbies such as sports, games, or music. And I was able to become friends immediately with the members, because we shared a lot of experiences ever since our trainee days and spent time together. Q: Something you feel fresh for girls are? Jinyoung: Fashion. I feel freshness coming from a fashionable girl when she wears a white t-shirt and jeans, but it doesn’t seem boring. CNU: It’s the same for me as well. I feel like they look the most fresh when they don’t over accessorize, and just wear things that are suitable to them. Like a girl who wears jeans that are very suitable to her. Sandeul: There’s a girl who comes out often in my dreams who wears drawstring pants and a hunting cap. But although that girl came out in my dreams! she was really fresh. Baro: A girl whose heart flutters or beats at certain things, or a girl who wears her own fashion without overdoing it! Gongchan: What I think is a girl who has a top bun with a hoodie and jeans! - kor. to eng. trans cr; hyejin @ b1a4trans | jpn. to kor. trans ; naver ; take out with full credits / B1A4Trans [VID/HD][720p] 130521 MBC Simsimtapa staff congratulate Baro for B1A4’s 1st win at Music Core with a cake cr: MBCkpop / AviateB1A4
About Joo YoungKim Joo Young 김주영 (Joo Young). You might ask why I'm posting about him and the reality is that I loved his album. He is simply perfect. His voice is amazing. I am really hooked on his title song From Me To You and the one he made with Ra.D called Hang Up The Phone. He wrote all the songs too. But yes do check/download his album you wont regreted. The kid CAN SING and WILL transport you to this soultry part of your heart that might think it was all gone and missing. I can't wait for the day that CNU and Joo Young do a collab together. That I think will be a very awesome thing for both of them since both have gone though a lot of stuff running after their dreams. It is really sad that Joo Young music is not appreciated and his videos are not that well known of.

What is Coming Age day? Coming of age is a young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. In Korea, citizens are permitted to marry, vote, drive, drink alcohol, and smoke at age 20. The Monday of the third week of May is “coming-of-age day”. On that day, those entering adulthood are to receive three gifts: flowers, perfume and a kiss. a Korean traditional ornamental hairpin. Both of them wore hanbok, and wearing hanbok on the coming of age ceremony can be sometimes seen even now. Credits taken from: B1A4-Couple radio-palava:
The “more love, more hugs” model has just gotten its first validation: B1A4 won their first ever first-place on Music Core today. Throughout these promotions, B1A4 have continued to make it clear that what they care about is using their truth to bring joy to their fans and to anyone willing to listen. The members repeatedly link truth and love in their discussions of artist-audience relationships. From this interview with OSEN: The fans have waited for a long time. So we worked even harder to show a better and newer look to us. During this comeback, I felt like we united with the fans. We also felt more fond (of the fans). This comeback feels very different, because we gave more thought about our musical color. -Jinyoung Here Jinyoung discusses the importance of the group’s bond with their fans and their attempts to present themselves with integrity (“our musical color”) in order to please fans. The thesis about the relationship between truth and love, presented in What’s Happening, is thus mirrored in the group’s actions. For Jinyoung and B1A4, the strength of their relationship with fans depends on the integrity of their “musical color,” their uniquely B1A4 performance. We are really close with our fans. Even today, we can recognize a considerable number of the fans’ face who came to the pre-recording. We’re also pretty good at memorizing their nicknames. I think the fans like such friendly sides to us. They’re also accepting of our enthusiasm for music. -Sandeul Sandeul again emphasizes the importance of truth and reciprocity - the group knows the fans, the fans know and accept the group as they are (in other words, they will wait six months for a comeback because they know B1A4 wants to present quality music). Knowing fans’ names and faces is the beginning of B1A4 knowing and understanding fans’ truths and lived realities. Below, Baro touches on why understanding those lived realities is critical: It’ll be nice if many people listened to our music and liked it, no matter who you are. We worked hard to make use of our experiences so that the listeners can identify with the music. Just like we have discussed this amongst ourselves, we will continue to stand in front of the fans without change. We want to share our music with more people. -Baro Thus, the comeback itself is not just about fans - it is an attempt to bring more people in by telling stories of lived and shared realities. It begins with B1A4’s relationships with each other (“just like we have discussed this amongst ourselves”) and with their fans, and ripples out to affect anyone who will listen. When people share a reality - whether it is the story a song tells, or simply enjoyment of the song itself - they have a base from which to begin to understand each other, to work together, and to spread love to others. This is B1A4’s moral guidepost. From this article on Kpop Starz: Our fans had a lot of hopes and anticipation for the new album, so we worked very hard to show them something new and different… We decided to give up expectations and empty our minds. We are actually honored to share the stage with legends who have paved the way for us. Maybe they will like us if they see us doing our best to do our music. B1A4’s ultimate goal is “For a lot of people to listen to our songs and love them. We are trying our best to build a connection between our experiences and those of the majority of the public. We hope to share our songs with more and more people out there.” B1A4 refuses to be cowed by the comebacks of more popular and longstanding kpop acts, including Lee Hyori, 2PM, and 4minute. In fact, they hope to spread the love to these other artists as well - they are entirely gracious even as they attempt to include everyone in their “more love, more hugs” model. (See also this wonderful signed album sent to 2PM’s Chansung.) And from this article: We worried a lot about all songs. We wanted to create an album that people will like listening to all our songs and not only our title track. I wish our fans would like all tracks. -Sandeul Sandeul is concerned here with the artist-fan relationship specifically, pointing out that the title track is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the group hopes to share. I only want to let our fans listen to our music soon. We really tried hard to return for the fans who have waited for us. I still feel that we haven’t fulfilled the things that we want to do. I want to work together with our fans fast and fill in the remaining. -Jinyoung For leader Jinyoung, B1A4’s work remains incomplete. Yet that incompleteness is an opportunity to continue to build relationships; ultimately, Jinyoung recognizes that whatever B1A4 accomplishes in terms of spreading love is a co-creative effort with fans. The Music Core win, then, is significant not because it says anything in particular about the quality of the song, or even the popularity of the group in sheer numbers. What is significant about the win is that for the first time audiences made their love for the group publicly recognizable, via physical sales, digital sales, Youtube plays, Twitter mentions, and so on. So when we see the members completely lose composure (bless CNU’s heart), it in is the realization that the love they have been spreading for two years is finally coming back to them in a way that the industry recognizes as being worthy. (And watching the members celebrate with each other - Sandeul holding Jinyoung as the leader sobs into his shirt, Baro choking back his own tears as he accepts the trophy and places CNU’s hat back on his head - the dividends of teamwork don’t get much better than this.) Apparently, this accomplishment is controversial: no sooner had B1A4’s tears dried than netizens were complaining that the win was undeserved, that Music Core’s ranking system is unfair, and that B1A4 continue to be virtual unknowns. For example: 5. [+202, -82] The most ridiculous #1 in music program history! Can someone please explain to me how these kids are #1? 6. [+28, -6] Just like the title of their song, ‘what is going on?’ A program that gives you #1 as long as your stupid fangirls vote for you Apparently these netizens have missed the point: B1A4’s work is about those “stupid fangirls” and honoring their truths, their desires, their imaginations, and their listenership. After two years of refining this model of artist-audience reciprocity, it makes sense that the most loyal of audience members, the fans, have helped to bring B1A4 this recognition by the industry. Netizens may continue to complain that they have never heard the song, that B1A4 are nugus, and so forth, but they cannot diminish the love between artists and fans. Some people bought more than one album. Some people loop-played the music video. Fans did what they could to make it possible for B1A4 to feel this loved. The artists and the fans literally worked together for the shared moment of the win. And the win itself is only the latest in a series of unlikely events, including B1A4’s debut, Jinyoung writing title tracks, the group’s successful solo concert, and so on, that show how B1A4 thrives in the defiance of an industry that is constructed to crush spirits and confine hopes and desires. The takeaway is this: the “more love, more hugs” model works. In spite of the industry’s restrictive and oppressive structures, in spite of netizen vitriol, what matters to B1A4 is loving each other and loving their audiences. And it does make a difference - the Music Core win demonstrates the power of the artist-fan relationship for the world to see and respect.
