[INTERVIEW] The Five Boys who had a Dream, B1A4 From their trainee days these five boys gathered up their efforts and dreamed only of music. And that dream happened. They debuted, won rookie awards, had their first concert, and even won the 1st place award on a music program. However the boys keep on dreaming further. Due to Baro’s leg injury we thought you would be unable to come. How did you hurt yourleg? Baro: We were going to prerecord a performance, but I sprained my leg. At first we thought I had just pulled a ligament in my leg, but I got an MRI done and they told me that I had torn my ligament. I don’t know if it’ll heal right, and because I keep moving around, it seems I’ll have to get surgery done. Now looking at B1A4 it seems that our members are a general hospital. Ha-ha Sandeul: I and Baro are in charge of the legs (Sandeul has received surgery on his knee). Jinyoung hyung is in charge of minor illnesses and Gongchan has received kidney surgery. Oh now that I think about it, it seems that CNU hyung is the only one who hasn’t gotten hurt? Baro: CNU hyung is really strong. He takes care of his body really well. Ha-ha. But I think for a job like ours, taking care of your body is really important. If I had exercised regularly I could have handled the situation better. I used to play soccer, and I never got injured like this, you see. We heard you have a concert from August 7th to the 11th; it seems you’ll have to get better soon. Baro: That’s right. This concert we have a lot we want to show so we have to prepare a lot. This time we’re having a band, which we really wanted, and we have high expectations for this concert. At our first concert we did have MR, this time we adjusted the songs so they’re acoustic, and we’re planning to do it like that. As this time we’re having a concert on a smaller scale compared to the last time, I feel we will be able to be closer to our fans. Is there a reason why you wanted a band so much? CNU: In high school I used to be in a band, so I’ve always had an attraction to playing with a band. Then I was the vocal, and it was my high school’s first band. So starting from our trainee days, we always insisted on having a band. All the members have a strong desire to have a band and perform with a real sound. It seems that all the members have a strong desire for music. When you split up parts for a new song isn’t it tense sometimes? Sandeul: Because now we know each other’s voices well, we often have a feeling for whose voice fits best for each part. Our opinions often overlap, so there’s nothing to be tense about. Jinyoung: I think I have to adjust the songs accordingly so each member’s voice shines. Jinyoung has a 13 songs registered under his name as the producer. Where do you get your confidence from? Jinyoung: I try my best to read people’s minds. I try to see what people around me like. That way I can see what people like, and what the trend is. Even if I observe only the members, everyone has their own view on music. In order to try to create songs like that, I think a lot about it. I’ve listened to all of B1A4’s music. There seems to be a great diversity of songs? Jinyoung: Although we haven’t released that many albums, we try hard to include many different songs from many different genres of music. Ahead of time we listen to several different songs from each genre and try to create a song with that type of feeling. I don’t want to do the same thing over and over again, because then it can become worn out. When I listen to Jinyoung’s songs the lyrics really touched me. Do you have many experiences that you use? Jinyoung: Although some I draw from experience, I can, to some extent, use my imagination. I think of each song as a drama, that way on stage it’s easier to express my feelings. Also creating choreography, the lyrics, and the music video style is easier. Sandeul: This image training that Jinyoung hyung did really helped when I was doing the musical. When I was learning about musicals, you really have to connect with the audience through the song, and as the lyrics is part of the song, the lyrics. If I think about it, I was always doing that so it was faster for me to understand. CNU: We all went to watch Sandeul perform his musical, and we all cried a lot because we knew all the hard work he went through and we’ve all gone through that process. He worked really hard even though is knee was in a not good state. He did it once and he was really good. His energy was really high. It seems the feeling would be similar to that of when you got your first win with “What’s Going On.” Did you cry a lot on that day too? Baro: We had a fan sign day and there was so much we didn’t get to say to the fans. We asked to take a video and post it because we wanted to say thank you for all the people we were grate full too. That day we were all blank. Did you not think that you would get first place? Baro: We didn’t. We were so happy that we were able to go up on stage as 1st place contenders. And plus with the other contender for 1st place as Lee Hyori sunbaenim, we definitely thought that we would not get first place. Because in the past Psy sunbaenim got 2nd place. This time it was Lee Hyori sunbaenim and we though ‘how in the world are we here?’ But they called us. We hadn’t even thought about it, so we thought they were calling up someone else for 1st place. Sandeul: Starting from when I was little, I’ve always longed to have an encore stage. But now I was performing that encore stage. It felt surreal. We learned for the first time that right after they call you, you’re supposed to do your encore stage. Because we hadn’t done it before it was really embarrassing. Usually if you get first place, the singers thank their fans and even throw flowers, we didn’t know what to do. We didn’t know that for your encore stage, you don’t have to sing the whole song, but we thought you had to. So even though our voices wouldn’t come out because we had been crying, we sang the whole song. Although you don’t have to. Your newest song is like a really fitting outfit for B1A4. When you first listened to this song did you feel like that? CNU: All of us, when we first heard this song, thought that it should be our title track. Jinyoung knows our strengths, so he wrote a song that would showcase our strengths. With this song, I feel that we were able to play on stage the best. It’s the song that’s most like us. Is there anything different after you got your first win? Baro: It feels like we’re really starting now. It’s also a sign for us to work even harder. Is there anything you want to do once you get an even bigger award? Baro: In the future I want to say a line that everybody will remember. There’s a few that I’ve thought of. If an opportunity comes I want to try. But when I say it, I can’t think of anything. It’s like in the world cup when a goal goes in, everything’s crazy. Is it because you created your team name well, that you keep going on without stop? B1A4 is the abbreviation for ‘Be the one, All for one” and it means that the five members will come together as one and become the best. Did you all come up with the name? Baro: As many people know, within our members there one B-type blood, and four A-type blood, and that’s also where our name comes too. There were a lot of contenders like Phoenix, Legend, Ace, etc. Within those we thought that B1A4 fit us the best. In order to see what people thought we wrote B1A4 on a board outside of our office. As we wrote ‘B1A4’ it looked really pretty. CNU: Originally the A4 was in the front. But A4B1 was a little hard to pronounce. So we changed it. Baro: Then Jinyoung hyung opened the practice room door and walked about 5o meters outside. He wanted to hear how B1A4 would sound from far away. So we yelled out B1A4 from about 100 meters away, and it sounded nice. Gongchan: We thought about different situations where people would hear it.
