Vol.1 Nice to meet you, we are B1A4☆
―― We’re starting this new publication with B1A4!
―― Let’s start with an introduction as to what kind of group B1A4 is.
Gongchan: We are like a playground, with a variety of charms.
―― The playground is a place where everyone finds their inner child. We’ll continue to ask everyone about our charms, starting from now on. Sandeul, what do you think about the group?
Sandeul: It is what makes me healthy. We are a group that enjoys singing next to our fans. That is B1A4.
Baro: We do not put up a pretense, and B1A4 is a group that is extremely amiable!
―― So you guys are very close to the fans. B1A4 is a group name derived from the blood types of the members. How does the sole member with blood type B think of the other members with blood type A?
Baro: Jinyoung hyung is very much like a leader, and is charismatic.
Baro: But there are times where he acts like a spoilt baby too. (laugh)
―― Is there a big difference? When does he become a spoilt baby; we’ll be questioning him thoroughly from now on~
Jinyoung: Please look forward to it!
―― We will look forward to it. What kind of person is Sandeul?
Baro: Sandeul is always bright, and he smiles easily.
―― His existance is like the mood maker. How about CNU?
CNU: CNU is shy around strangers, but if he’s with the members he becomes very talkative.
―― I see. We want to hear a lot from CNU in this publication so please take us of us.
CNU: Yes! I will work hard!
―― Lastly, what kind of person is Gongchan?
Baro: Gongchan is someone who is as detailed to cleaning up after us, and he is a maknae who treats us well.
―― So he is the considerate and reliable maknae.
Gongchan: If I weren’t reliable…..
Jinyoung: Ahaha (laugh). As a leader, I really depend on him because he is so detailed.
―― So what kind of person does Baro seem like to the members with blood type A?
Jinyoung:He looks friendly, but has a surprising self-disclipined side to him.
―― So he lives by his principles?
CNU: I’ve always thought that blood type Bs were very cold. But when you look at Baro, he’s the total opposite; friendly and warm. He changed my image of blood type Bs.
Sandeul: Honestly in the beginning, I didn’t even know the differences in personalities between blood type As and Bs….
―― There might be a difference in personalities and characters between the members with blood type A too.
Sandeul: Baro has a very cool image to me. Sometimes he feels like a blood type A to me? For example when he becomes timid…. (laugh)
Sandeul: On the opposite, there are times when I’m cool about things, and there are times when I’m timid. I’m similar to Baro.
―― You guys seem to have many complaints (laugh)!
Jinyoung: Even so, it’s not a bad thing (laugh).
Gongchan: Generally, I think we’re a very charming group.
Baro: I feel that the more you get to know us, the better you’ll like us.
―― What are your impressions of the Japanese fans?
Sandeul: The language spoken may be different, but other than that they are no difference from the Korean fans. The way they cheer us on is the same~!
Members: That’s right~ It’s the same~!!
Jinyoung: There are also many fans who come to our events wearing the same outfits as us (cosplay!?). Initially we were shocked but it was nice because they looked upon us nicely.
―― That is because not only just your high quality of music and performance, your cool pop fashion has been receiving much attention.
Baro: That is something that we pay much attention to, so we’re really happy. In future we wish to try different styles of fashion.
―― What are the things that you wish to do during your promotions in Japan?
Sandeul: Most importantly, I want to stand on many different stages in Japan. I want to spend time with the fans!
Baro: I want to be on a stage where I can have a carefree performance, like a summer festival. I also wish to interact with Japanese artistes. Via the publication of ORICON STYLE, I want to create a new character, and consider a story for me and Sandeul.
―― What is this new character you speak of!?
CNU: I want to go to different places in Japan and meet people.
―― Do you have a goal for your Japanese promotions?
Gongchan: I want to receive the rookie award!
Jinyoung: I want to hold a concert in front of the fans! And achieving number one on the Oricon charts!
―― Finally, please leave a message to the readers.
Members: Everyone~ We’ll be appearing on ORICON STYLE with the different sides to us, so please look forward to the publication~ We’re looking forward to everyone’s messages!

In commemoration of the release of B1A4's Japanese debut single, 'Beautiful Target'! A special interview!
The rookie boys group that became a topic, colouring the K-POP scene of 2011 vividly, B1A4, is debuting in Japan at last!
Last spring, boys group B1A4 debuted in Korea with their catchy and colourful pop music that became a hot topic! Their unique name comes from how they have one member of blood type B, and four members of blood type A. It also has the meaning of ‘Be the one, All for one’, where the members would do their best in order to realise their dreams. In terms of their music, performance and fashion, they who showed a different type of personality as compared to other groups, won the ‘Rookie Of The Year’ award during Tower Records’ ‘K-POP LOVERS! AWARDS 2011’, and are a five member group that have gotten both number 1 in terms of sales and fan voting.
That B1A4 will be having their Japanese debut on the 27th of June with their single ‘Beautiful Target’. First off, in spite of their earnestness before their Japanese debut, with a state of both surprise and happiness, B1A4 told us about topics that Tower Records’ users are paying high attention to.
Jinyoung: We’ve received a lot of support from everyone in Japan, thank you very much. From now on, us members will work hard, and show everyone a cooler figure!
Baro: With a great amount of support from our fans comes great responsibility on our part. We will work hard in order to live up to everyone’s feelings!
Sandeul: Before, when we came to Japan, it wasn’t like that, but recently it seems that our Japanese fans have been noticing us, and I think it’s a wonder.
Gongchan: Even though our official Japanese debut isn’t until later, we’ve gotten a lot of support from Japan, and I feel the same as Sandeul about how it’s all a wonder to me. I’m really happy. From now on, we’d work hard in order to meet everyone’s expectations.
Baro: When you talk about it, during our ‘BANA JAPAN FORMED FORMULA’ in April, there were fans who wore exactly the same clothes as we did. Also, a five year old boy gave us a letter as a fan. To have a fan of such a young age is just…
Jinyoung: Come to think of it, we were pleasantly surprised to see men in suits amongst the audience.
THE RECORDING IN WHICH THEY REALISED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND THE JAPANESE VERSION
Even while doing promotions in Korea, their attitude towards music is really stoical, and they move the hearts of many people regardless of generation and gender in Japan. B1A4 participates actively in the composition, production, and writing of lyrics for their songs, and they continue to pursue a ‘B1A4 identity’ that other groups do not possess. This spring, the lead song ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ from their album ‘Ignition’ released in Korea was produced by Jinyoung. While making use of the members’ personality, and a song that is easy to get into, charming you with its dramatic development, B1A4 shows their improvement in terms of song writing. Such of course is Jinyoung, and with the five members who are devoted to their strong passion towards music, their singing ability, performance, up to their expressions they have on stage, they have extraordinary faith in being artistes that embody the world view that is ‘B1A4’. For that reason alone, ‘Beautiful Target’, which is the Japanese debut song for B1A4, the Japanese version of ‘Chu Chu Chu’ and ‘Bling Girl’ that are the coupling songs, all the more brings out the strong feelings of the members.
Sandeul: There’s a slight difference in the lyrics between the original Korean and Japanese version of the song. That’s why we worked hard so as to be able to get the meaning of the Japanese version across properly.
Baro: For ‘Chu Chu Chu’, the title of the song’s ‘Chu’ comes from a saying in Korea, ‘Woochuchu’, that a boy says to a girl when he is trying to cheer her up. However, the meaning of ‘Chu’ in Japanese is different [t/n: it means a kiss in japanese] and we were worried about expressing the nuance of the word well. I was in charge of rap making for the song, and because of that, it was a tough job for me to make sure that the rhyme fits and Japanese people would understand the meaning of the rap when they hear it. However, it was worth the trouble, and because the part was matched correctly, we’d like you to listen to it.
Jinyoung: As for Bling Girl, it was difficult trying to match the lyrics and the syllables.
Baro: ’Bling Girl’ is a song that Jinyoung hyung composed, and while keeping the atmosphere of the original version alive, there were a lot of ad libs by the members, and it became a really enjoyable recording.
With that, it seems that B1A4 had some difficulties when it came to recording in Japanese…
Jinyoung: In my part, there’s a line that goes ‘~ no you na’, and at first I had difficulties trying to match the syllables to the music. However, it was a new experience for me, and that was enjoyable. In Japanese, even if only one character is different, the meaning changes entirely. For example, ‘kiite kudasai’ (please listen) and ‘kite kudasai’ (please come), without the ‘i’, the meaning changes entirely. The first time I learnt of this difference was during this round’s recording. I sang, paying attention to this point.
There is worth in the trouble that the members went through, and of course, the Japanese versions of ‘Beautiful Target’, ‘Chu Chu Chu’, and ‘Bling Girl’ that were reborn anew, and including the Japanese original song ‘Ready to go’ that is only included in the Regular Edition of the single, the numbers in which you can meet B1A4’s charms are complete. Finally, this question was posed to the members - ‘If you produced your Japan original piece of music newly, what kind of musical piece would you want to release?’
CNU: I’d like to do a song that is firmly filled with B1A4’s colours. In Korea, the song ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ that we released in March was like that, but in terms of the group, of course, it’s a song that showcases each member’s (special) colours. That’s why I think that we’d like to do a song like that, and give a shining performance.
Baro: It’s a given fact that it’d be a song with B1A4’s colours in it, but we’d like to make a song that lives up to everyone’s hopes. We’d like to have a stage that we would be able to enjoy with all our Japanese fans, and we’d like to release such a song.
Jinyoung: If I create a song, adding on to what CNU and Baro said, because I think that I have to make a song that Japan will think is good, I’m researching the types of music that Japanese people like. I listen to J-Pop often, and when new songs are released, I will check it out whenever it is possible for me to. I’ve got the impression that many Japanese songs have lyrics that express the theme of ‘hope’. Because I like songs in that vein, if I were to write lyrics, I think I’d add in ‘hope’.
B1A4 talk about the image that they have towards J-Pop, that is, ‘hope’. The world of music that B1A4 creates is overflowing with ‘hope towards the future’, and there may be many fans who feel that when they listen to it, it gives the listener spirit and courage. Korea and Japan, who take in the good parts of one another’s music scene, as they build up on their generous effort, B1A4, who goes in the pursuit of their group ‘identity’, is a group that we must keep our eye on in the future.

★ Beautiful Target is a song that gives you strength
- You debuted in Korea last year in April, and after a year you’ve decided on your Japanese debut. Do you think it’s fast?
CNU: I’m not sure how it is like for the other artistes but I feel that it’s not too fast, not too slow. It’s a good timing?
Baro: We did not have the urge to hurry with our debut in Japan, but to be able to debut in Japan makes us happy, because we could allow more people to listen to the music we like too.
- Who have you spoken to about regarding your Japanese debut?
Jinyoung: …Because we’re been so busy, I haven’t spoken to anyone about it yet (laugh). But my family and friends will probably find out from the news articles.
Gongchan: We shared our happiness amongst ourselves.
CNU: That’s why we don’t know how the reaction is like around us.
All: Ahahahaha (laugh).
- Your debut song is the Japanese version of your Korean title song Beautiful Target. Is there anything you’ve newly discovered during recording?
Baro: It was easier to record as compared to before.
Jinyoung: Even though it was so when I sang, I discovered the effectiveness of the song during the music video shoot. We were really tired when the filming continued through the night…
Members: That’s right. So tired~
Jinyoung: But the song wakes you up immediately! So I felt once again, ah.. It’s a famous song. It’s an enjoyable song.
CNU: Your strength just rises.
Baro: When we filmed for the original Korean music video, there were parts in our dance, gestures and expressions that we were not satisfied with. But after dancing a lot to it during our Korean promotions, and practicing the Japanese version a lot during recording.. We feel more carefree in expressing our emotions in our second round of promotions, as compared to the first.
Sandeul: You’ll never get sick of this song~
- Is the Japanese language difficult?
Jinyoung: Almost half of the lyrics to Beautiful Target is in English. So it was not as difficult as we expected.
CNU: We also practiced our pronounciations a lot. In the Japanese language, when you get a tone wrong the entire meaning changes. I put a little more effort in that part.
Baro: There weren’t much troubles in my rap too. But it was a little hard to match the rhymes? We studied Japanese hard!
Jinyoung: We are attending Japanese language classes, and whenever we have time we memorize vocabulary.
- The recording of your other song Bling Girl was directed by Jinyoung, right?
Jinyoung: Yes! We spent 9 hours recording it. The members helped out and the recording went perfectly. The atmosphere was good, so the people recording feel good too.
CNU: Bling Girl is also a song that you can gain strength from after listening to it. We who sing it gain strength too!
Jinyoung: Whenever we record, the members will each obtain a topic and challenge to clear it. It all comes out on the song. I think we matured a lot in this point.
CNU: When we’re all done singing, we listen to it at once together. It is very realistic, as we listen to each other’s voices and say things like, “Ah, you’ve improved here~”.
★ Secrets of how the members have changed?
- So from now on, we’ll be carrying on the solo photoshoots… Please talk about how he (the person not present) has changed after debut, and how he has not changed. (laugh) Starting with Baro?
Gongchan: During OK days, he was like a child but starting from Baby I’m Sorry he became manly! Recently when I look at Baro hyung’s pictures I feel that he is handsome.
Jinyoung: He has matured a lot with regards to his thoughts. He has been reading books often lately, so his vocabulary has increased too. He’s working hard at self-development.
Sandeul: Baro does really well at self-management, he does it consistently.
CNU: In the waiting rooms of music broadcasts, the other members would be asleep from fatigue but he’d be reading a book. I feel that he’s working really hard.
- Who is always sleeping?
Sandeul: ……..(Chooses CNU with his finger)
CNU: I don’t always do so (laugh).
- How has leader Jinyoung changed?
CNU: He has not changed with regards to how he works hard when composing music. Even during our busy promotional period, he’d be composing through the night despite being sleepy. That side to him is extremely cool.
Gongchan: He is a man who does not know of giving up. He does something until it reaches perfection. Whenever we record, he keeps getting us to repeat in order to improve the quality of our vocals. That’s why he has the nickname of “also”. (Pointing to Sandeul) He is the victim of the “also/as well” attack, having to leave and wait. We keep hearing Jinyoung say “it’s good now but do this also”.
Sandeul: Yes… I am always in the recording booth (in a small voice). Ah! Jinyoung hyung just looked at me. Scary! Jinyoung hyung has matured and grown more handsome as the days pass… as well (laugh).
Gongchan: Also… We keep hearing it so it’s stuck to our lips (laugh).
Sandeul: Also (laugh). Jinyoung hyung keeps on doing aegyo these days as well.
Gongchan: If we’re talking about recently, isn’t it Sandeul hyung?
Baro: Because Gongchan is the youngest, he has much aegyo. But in Sandeul’s case, rather than aegyo…
Gongchan & Baro: You’d want to strangle him? (laugh)
- Jinyoung has returned and CNU has left. Please talk about CNU next.
Gongchan: CNU hyung has not changed a single bit since the past. He’s always slow (laugh). When we’re done with practice and we all leave by car, only CNU hyung doesn’t come out. If we had to talk about what he does instead… He checks if all the lights are switched off, since he is the mother (laugh).
Jinyoung: He has changed in the way that he doesn’t waste his efforts by challenging himself to improve and he works harder than ever.
Baro: And as compared to when we first debut, he jokes around less. Maybe he’s busy, or tired but he no longer jokes around with me, he’s gotten tired of me. At those times I get Sandeul to play with me (laugh).
Sandeul: Despite being sleepy (laugh).
- How about the youngest, Gongchan?
Jinyoung: After turning 20, he has matured and now has clear ideas on what to do to be better. He’ll be a dongsaeng who will turn out good. He has not changed in the way that he still does aegyo to us? Our maknae will be our maknae forever, so I hope that him doing aegyo to us doesn’t change too.
Baro: He hasn’t changed in his ability to calmly access a situation.
CNU: Rather than being calm, there is something you can look forward to? (laugh)
Jinyoung: He is a child who breaks with a snap.
- And lastly, Sandeul?
Jinyoung: His appetite has not changed (laugh). He has changed in the way that he is able to tell the members about his challenges in life after we debut. As the main vocal, there are many troubles that he holds to himself regarding singing. But that is a good change. To have many troubles means that you develop faster.
Baro: His passion for singing has not changed. It has in fact increased! I think it has changed slightly from the past; after we started living together, the connection by music has molded Sandeul’s personality into a much brighter one.
Gongchan: His face and body have become cooler. Before debut he wore spectacles so it was a little tacky, but just him removing his spectacles he’s become much cooler. Also, after he ends his dieting carried out during our promotional period, he gains the weight back. It’s possible to gain the weight lost from self-management (laugh).
- Please say a sentence each about your feelings about your approaching Japanese debut.
Jinyoung: More than being tense, we are nervous. We have worked hard for our Japanese debut. We want to hurry meet everyone, and stand on the stage soon.
Baro: My heart goes dugeun dugeun at the thought of the Japanese debut. I can’t fall asleep!
CNU: I miss everyone, to the extent of wanting to go on a date together. Please cheer for us!

About 0.3 tons (600 pounds) of rice were donated by Bana to cheer Sandeul’s musical theatre debut.
June 25 at 3pm at COEX Artium Hall, the presscon of “Brothers Were Brave” was held. Sandeul performing one of song’s reverse. It was such a worth casting him in. At presscon, the appearance of massive amount of rice can’t be ignored. “The donation will be under nuna’s name”, “From nunas of Busan-man”. The donation from Bana (B1A4 official fanclub) to cheer ‘Joo Bong’ (sandeul’s cast) really caught my (reporter) eyes. Enews contacted Sandeul’s agency WMent,“When we were still trainees, we really had fun watching musical. And when I was chosen to join in a musical, I dedicate all my spare time between busy schedule to practice. But on the stage, there are so many sunbae (good actors), I’ve been feeling so much pressure.” they said.
